Are Head Spas The New Non-Negotiable Beauty Ritual?

Are Head Spas The New Non-Negotiable Beauty Ritual?

Head spas are trending in the UK, but what actually are they, and are they really important for hair health? Jenya Di Pierro, founder of Cloud Twelve, one of London’s leading head spas, shares the science behind them

For years, we’ve been conditioned to treat facials as a non-negotiable part of our beauty and wellness routines. Yet the scalp — the living ecosystem from which every strand of hair emerges

— is often overlooked. As a herbalist and naturopath, I have long believed that scalp care deserves the same consistency and reverence as skincare. Today, science confirms it.

Research shows that many common hair concerns originate at the scalp, not the hair shaft. According to the International Journal of Trichology, more than 75% of people experience scalp conditions such as dandruff, dryness, or sensitivity at some point in their lives — all of which can directly affect hair thickness, shine, and growth. Another study published in Skin Appendage Disorders links poor scalp circulation to weakened follicles and accelerated thinning.

When clients ask me why their hair treatments or products aren’t delivering results, the answer is almost always the same: investigate internal causes, such as hormonal imbalances, auto-immunity, nutrient deficiencies, stress or gut health - but always start with the scalp. Just as glowing skin begins with a healthy skin barrier, beautiful hair begins with a nourished, clean, and well-stimulated scalp.

Daily styling, colouring, and environmental pollutants all take a cumulative toll. Research from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences shows that environmental pollution can clog pores, disrupt the scalp microbiome, and contribute to inflammation — much like it does to facial skin. Yet unlike the face, the scalp receives little targeted care at home.

Conventional shampoos and conditioners simply cannot undo months of buildup from silicones, hair dyes, hard water, sebum, sweat and pollutants. Without intervention, this buildup forms a barrier that suffocates follicles, leading to dullness, breakage and reduced hair density.

This is where head spas come in — reaching a level of care home routines cannot. Through advanced scalp diagnostics, exfoliation, micro-circulation massage, herbal treatments, micro-current and LED therapy, we can deeply cleanse and reset the scalp environment, much like an expertly performed facial detoxifies and rebalances the skin.

And the results are measurable. Scalp massage can increase hair thickness by up to 9% over 24 weeks due to improved blood flow and follicle stimulation, according to the ePlasty Journal. LED therapy has been clinically shown to enhance cellular activity, reduce inflammation and support hair growth. Regular treatment helps maintain these benefits, preventing issues rather than reacting to them.

Beyond the physical results, head spa rituals can also support emotional wellbeing. The scalp is rich in nerve endings, and intentional, rhythmic massage has been shown to reduce cortisol levels and activate the parasympathetic nervous system. Clients often tell me it’s the first time they’ve truly switched off all week.

But the key to transformation is consistency. Just as we consider facials routine maintenance — not a one-off indulgence — scalp care should follow the same principle.
