The Best Organic Hair Care Brands and Products

Your hair is one of the most important features of your appearance, and it's important to take care of it properly.

Our hair and skin health is a crucial factor that influences not just our physical and biological quality of life, but also our psychological and mental well-being, which impacts our confidence and effectiveness.

However, many commercial hair care products are full of harsh chemicals that can be harmful to your hair, scalp, and health. It’s one of my brand's missions to research and test out each haircare and hair colour product before I will implement it. As such, I only work with brands that are organic and also drive results.

1. Organic Hair Care, what does it actually mean?

There are significant differences between organic and natural products. If you see “natural” written on a label that broadly means that ingredients were produced by nature but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they are “organic”. Natural products can contain chemicals but that is not the case of organic products. “Organic” strictly refers to ingredients that are farmed without pesticides, chemicals or artificial fertilisers and is non-GMO.

You can safely assume that an organic product will have between 95-100% chemical-free ingredients while for a natural product; this is usually around 50-70%.

2. Organic vs Conventional and What to Avoid in your Products Ingredients List

Most conventional haircare products are loaded with synthetic chemicals that can be damaging to your hair and scalp. These chemicals can cause things like scalp irritation, hair loss, hormonal imbalances and even cancer.

I recommend avoiding:

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate

This chemical is a harsh detergent that can strip your hair of its natural oils, leaving it dry and brittle.

Parabens

(Butyl, propyl and ethyl parabens) These chemicals are used as preservatives, and they have been linked to breast cancer and other types of cancer.

Polyethene Glycols (PEG)

PEG is a derivative of petroleum that is used in haircare products as a thickening agent.

However there isn’t much research on how toxic it is for humans, most trichologists recommend avoiding it for the health of your hair and scalp.

Silicone (Dimethicone)

Over time, silicone can build up in your hair, resulting in a dry feel and dull appearance. You may even notice that your hair becomes weaker and more prone to breakage. And if you're using a form of silicone that isn't water-soluble, it can be really hard to remove it with a regular wash.

Resorcinol, Ppds, Ptds

These are common ingredients in hair dyes and bleaching agents, and are linked to skin irritation. They can also cause functional disabilities of the immune system. In animals, they can cause thyroid function disruption.

3. Top Organic Hair Care and Colour Products/ Brands in the UK

Organic Colour Systems

A UK-based vegan-friendly, ammonia, paraben and resorcinol-free, salon professional brand with a permanent hair colour range. They optimise the use of natural and certified organic ingredients and minimise the use of harsh chemical additives.

Ideal for individuals who are mindful of their ingredients, expecting, or have significant allergies.
Their range of permanent colours is considered to be among the least harmful options available in the market.

Your hair will achieve a super natural-looking, luminous, healthier, and moisturised appearance. As if you had never dyed it.

Daniel Field Hair Care

An expert in organic and mineral hair care based in London. His expertise is treating hair loss caused by cancer. His line of hair care products includes crucial ingredients like zinc, iron, selenium, and silica that promote healthy hair follicles and prevent hair loss.

Magnesium and calcium minerals play a crucial role in sustaining the vitality and fortitude of hair fibres.

A product I recommend trying is his 'Hair Growth Spray Active', designed to address temporary hair loss caused by hormonal changes, pregnancy, stress, or trauma. It can increase the rate of hair growth and thickness by 20%.

I also recommend the 'Detox Powder' - a vitamin c and ascorbic acid product which will cleanse your hair and scalp from pollutants, hard water, and chlorine and will rebalance the ph of your hair and scalp to their optimum level.

Epiic Hair Care

They are a Swedish brand - Cosmos, Eco and Ocean plastic waste certified. Their entire line of hair care products contains 93-97% organic-derived ingredients. In addition, it should be mentioned that it is certified vegan and cruelty-free.

Their 'Moisturize it' and 'Repair It' ranges are a must-try.

Appropriate for hair that has been damaged, dried out, or treated chemically. The product contains algae extract, vitamin B5, and aloe vera that restores the hair shaft's natural strength, softness and shine.

Composed of minuscule molecules, this results in enhanced penetration of the nourishing properties into the hair, resulting in improved strength and shine.

4. Thinking of Switching to Organic Hair Care and Colouring?

Throughout my 5-year career in the organic and natural hair industry, I have been amazed by the transformation these products gradually bring to hair.

I love the fact that I now have the ability to colour a wide range of hair types without damaging their condition.
Switching to organic hair products can greatly improve the quality of your hair, whether you are experiencing pregnancy, hair loss, thinning, damage from processing, allergies, illnesses, or simply prefer organic ingredients.

You will be impressed by the long-term results and their positive effects.
